Expand community outreach during Mental Health Awareness Month by attending the 1,000 Flags event on May 25, 2024. This partnership between Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary and Blue Zones Project – Bakersfield aims to promote community service and health.

Both organizations are committed to fostering community spirit and promoting service above self. Every year, the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary provides treats to approximately 120 volunteers, and this year, they are highlighting local Blue Zones-approved restaurants. This includes Locale Farm to Table, Modern Grub, and Sweet Peas Bakery/Better Bowls.

The Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary is part of Rotary International, a global organization of community leaders dedicated to tackling humanitarian challenges. Their mission includes promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, supporting education, and growing local economies. Organizing events like the 1,000 Flags honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice and brings the community together for a common cause.

The Blue Zones Project – Bakersfield

The Blue Zones Project is inspired by the original Blue Zones—regions where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives. The project applies these principles to improve community health and well-being. The Blue Zones Project aims to reduce chronic disease and increase life expectancy by encouraging healthier lifestyles and promoting nutritious food options.

This partnership is about creating a healthier community and showing the impact of collaborative efforts. Given the alignment with Memorial Day and Mental Health Awareness Month, the event is a perfect opportunity to support those served and promote mental well-being through nutritious food.

This year’s event will feature Blue Zones-approved restaurants: Locale Farm to Table, Modern Grub, and Sweet Peas Bakery/Better Bowls. Additional contributors include Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Harvest Fresh Market/Montana Ranch (working on Blue Zones approval), Mama Vega Enterprises, Smart & Final, Smith’s Bakery, and The Blue Zones Project – Bakersfield, Hosted by Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary.

In this role, she serves as their Public Relations (PR) person, contributing her skills and expertise to enhance the organization's outreach and communication efforts. Beyond her involvement with the Rotary, Charmène actively participates in the Bakersfield Blue Zone Project. Here, she takes on the role of a nutrition educator, conducting classes that delve into the intricacies of nutrition. Her classes go beyond the basics, incorporating detailed information about the nutritional benefits of each ingredient. Charmène’s approach includes sharing recipes along with the associated health benefits, providing a comprehensive understanding of the connection between food and well-being. Additionally, Charmène is recognized as a guest nutrition expert on the Blue Zone Project Wednesday Wellness sessions. This involvement underscores her dedication to promoting healthy living within the community.
